Middle School
At Westminster Christian School, we believe the middle school years
are years of change and transition for all students. Up until this
point of life, most students have developed at a fairly even pace.
During the middle school years, students begin to develop at different
rates in different areas; student changes occur in all areas of their
being. Students begin to develop a sense of individuality as well
as become intouch with their emotions. The social aspect of school
begins to take on a greater importance to them as they grow.
The Westminster Christian School Middle School is a division that
currently falls under our Elementary Principal. The division contains
grades 5-8 and is structured in a way that allows the 5th and 6th
grade to stay in the elementary mode for a longer period while students
are slowly exposed to the middle school concept. The 7th and 8th
grades are housed in an area that allows students more mobility,
responsibility, and independence. We believe in structuring the
7th and 8th grades in a middle school mode that allows them to become
acclimated to the middle school concept.
The middle school concept is designed in a way that allows students
to adopt and become acclimated to middle school while being prepared
for the rigors of high school. Our faculty and staff are very aware
of the unique needs and struggles of middle school students. They
understand the tremendous changes that take place developmentally,
emotionally, academically, and socially in our middle school students
and are positioned to be of great assistance.
In the middle school, students begin to think in abstract concepts
instead of purely concrete concepts. Westminster Christian School
strongly believes in the concept of critical thinking and begins
to expose students to these skills in the 6th grade. We based our
critical thinking program on Bloom's Taxonomy of Thinking Skills.
Our desire is for our graduates to be critical thinkers and independent
learners.
Our middle school classes typically average between 16 -20 students
per class. The smaller class size allows teachers opportunities
to give attention and individual guidance to meet the needs of all
students. Our students are self-motivated and understanding of the
gift of Christian education and therefore discipline problems are
rare.
